Dr. Dove gives keynote at the V.M. Goldschmidt Conference in Lyon, France

In July 2023, Dr. Trish Dove gave a keynote presentation to a standing-room audience on Tuesday morning at the session, “Mechanistic links between (bio)mineral formation, environmental conditions, and proxy systems.” The talk highlighted our new research into polysaccharides and recent work by Brenna Knight that shows how advances in biopolymer synthesis can be applied to ask hypothesis-based questions that advance our understanding of biological mineralization. The title of the keynote:
Chitosan as a canvas for studies of macromolecular controls on CaCO3 biomineralization
with co-authors Brenna M. Knight, Kevin J. Edgar, and James J. De Yoreo.
There were plenty of other activities at the conference at this quite large post-covid Goldschmidt meeting. It was also quite hot during our time in Lyon!

Dr. Dove also participated in the mentoring program for the graduate students where she met with students from China and Israel.






Congratulations to Dr. Dove on this outstanding keynote. The interface between geochemistry, mineral growth, and materials science continues to be one of the most promising fields of study.
From an applied mineralogy standpoint, it is always interesting to see how basic mineral concepts translate into commercial industries. I often discuss this with colleagues from Latin America; they point out how even the commercial manufacturing of synthetic crystals used in fashion jewelry—what they call bisutería in Spanish-speaking markets—relies heavily on our understanding of crystal nucleation and biomineralization pathways discussed in conferences like Goldschmidt. Linking deep molecular research to consumer products is a great way to make geoscience accessible to the public.
Dr. Dove's keynote at the Goldschmidt Conference sounds absolutely brilliant. It’s inspiring to see such high-caliber geochemical research represented on a global stage. On a completely different note, balancing international academic travel with family life is quite the challenge! From an environmental geoscience perspective, these molecular insights are essential when we analyze the degradation of mass-produced commercial polymers.
